A network of
European collaboration

SMART Coast brings together public authorities, universities and tourism organisations from various regions across the Atlantic Area with the shared aim of developing more sustainable solutions for coastal tourism management.

Public entity (Groupement d’Intérêt Public) specialised in coastal management, climate change adaptation and sustainable planning.

Lead Partner. Coordinates the consortium and leads WP2 (operational implementation of the pilots). Main activities:

Leading the general coordination and governance of the project.
Supervising the preparation and implementation phases of all pilots.
Developing the “My Ocean Beaches” pilot, which manages visitor flows on five high-demand beaches in Gironde through real-time parking sensors, predictive algorithms and open-data platforms.

Irish public university with strong expertise in climate adaptation, coastal systems and community-led sustainability.

Leader of WP1 (knowledge creation). Main activities:

Leading the literature review and analysis of best practices.
Coordinating the regional resident surveys.
Implementing the pilot on the Maharees peninsula, focused on dune restoration, climate adaptation and sustainable mobility.

Public university with experience in mobility, smart planning and sustainable destinations.

Methodological leader for the pilot studies (guidelines for pilots). Main activities:

Developing the methodological framework for all pilot studies.
Implementing the pilot in O Grove and Bueu (Galicia), focused on sustainable mobility, smart analysis of visitor flows and responsible tourism campaigns.

Regional tourism authority responsible for sustainable destination planning and management.

Pilot implementer. Main activities:

Pilot on São Miguel Island: rehabilitation of the PR1 SMI trail (Fenais da Luz).
Integration of sensor systems, multimodal mobility, accessibility and environmental education initiatives.

Territorial authority covering 158 municipalities, including the entire coastal area of the French Basque Country.

Pilot implementer. Main activities:

Pilot across eight coastal municipalities (over 60 beaches).
Comprehensive analysis linking visitor flows to climate, tides, mobility, waste and parking.
Development of a real-time information system for visitors.

Regional tourism authority responsible for Portugal’s main tourism destination.

Pilot implementer. Main activities:

Pilot in Praia de Faro, focused on managing high seasonality and visitor concentration.
Implementation of tourist flow monitoring tools.

Municipality that hosts part of the UNESCO Global Geopark Costa Quebrada.

Pilot implementer in Cantabria. Main activities:

Intelligent parking system (AI + vehicle counting).
Monitoring of people flows (Bluetooth/WiFi detection).
Improvement of the Pinares park-and-ride system.
Environmental volunteering programme.

Regional authority responsible for mobility, environment and coastal protection.

Co-implementer of the pilot and regional coordination. Main activities:

Shared responsibility for the Piélagos pilot.
Leadership in the regional strategy for alternative mobility and data systems.

Public university recognised for its research focus, teaching quality and strong connection with the socio-economic environment.

Leader of WP3 (Communication, Dissemination & Transfer). Main activities:

Leading the communication plan, branding and visual identity of the project.
Implementing impact evaluation (focus groups in all territories).
Coordinating networking, training activities and results transfer.
