Work Packages
SMART Coast is structured around a three-part work plan that guides the project from initial research to practical implementation and long-term dissemination. Each Work Package (WP) plays a distinct yet complementary role in achieving the overall objectives of the project.
WorkPackage 1
To build knowledge capacity around managing visitor numbers in ecologically sensitive coastal areas
WP1 establishes the strategic and methodological foundation of the project. Its objective is to generate a robust body of evidence to guide the design, implementation and evaluation of the pilot actions. This package includes four main components:
- conducting a comprehensive literature review to define the theoretical framework;
- carrying out a situational analysis to understand local challenges and residents’ perceptions;
- identifying best practices in sustainable mobility, awareness‑raising and climate change adaptation;
- and developing common methodological guidelines to ensure consistent implementation of the pilots and proper collection of results across all partner regions.
Schedule
- Literature Review Jul 2025 – March 2026
- Situational Analysis Jul 2025 – March 2026
- Best Practice Analysis Jul 2025 – March 2026
WorkPackage 2
Pilot projects to test visitor flow management solutions in coastal areas
WP2 represents the operational core of SMART Coast. Its primary purpose is to test innovative solutions for visitor flow management, sustainable mobility and public awareness‑raising in seven coastal territories. Through these pilot actions, the project seeks to experiment with new tools, foster mutual learning among regions and generate evidence that can later be transferred and replicated. WP2 turns the analyses developed in WP1 into real interventions on the ground.
Schedule
- Preparation Jul 2025 – March 2026
- Measuring & Managing Visitor Flows (Implementation & monitoring) Jul 2025 – Dec 2027
- Sustainable Mobility alternative solutions (Implementation & monitoring) Jul 2025 – Dec 2027
- Visitor communication and awareness Jul 2025 – Dec 2027
WorkPackage 3
Dissemination and transfer activities
WP3 focuses on maximizing the long‑term impact of the project. Its objective is to ensure that the knowledge generated—both analytical and operational—is widely shared and adopted beyond the SMART Coast consortium itself. It includes activities such as training programmes for stakeholders, citizen awareness initiatives, high‑level dissemination events and targeted networking actions. This package provides the tools and mechanisms needed to ensure that the project’s results become a lasting and transferable legacy for the management of Atlantic coastal areas.
Schedule
- Dissemination plan & assessing pilot impact – Jul 2025 – Dec 2027
- Awareness & training programs for different audiences (public authorities, civil society, other stakeholders) – Apr 2026 – Dec 2027
- Networking with other projects & regions – Oct 2025 – Dec 2027
- Fostering the transfer of SMART Coast results to encourage innovation – Jan 2026 – Dec 2027
