Understand
coastal tourism to manage it better

The «Sustainable MAnagement of visitor flows for Resilient Tourism in Coastal Areas» -SMART Coast- project is an European project (EAPA 0068/2024) that brings together public administrations, universities, and tourism organisations from Spain, Portugal, Ireland, and France with the aim of improving tourism management in coastal areas.

The project will define a common and replicable strategy for sustainable management of visitor flows through pilot action experimentation across the regions of the consortium under 3 themes: a) Measuring and analysing visitor flows (with real data) to manage them properly; b) Alternative access and mobility; and c) Citizen awareness.

This project will be innovative by exploring solutions through regenerative tourism and a Leaders and Learners approach to share learnings throughout the project and beyond.

Coastal areas face New Challenges

Coastal areas across the Atlantic Area face significant challenges related to tourism pressure, mobility, and the protection of the natural environment.

Tourism Overcrowding

Coastal areas experience large concentrations of visitors during specific periods of the year.

Environmental Impact

Human pressure affects fragile ecosystems, biodiversity, and protected natural areas.

Dependence on Private Vehicles

The lack of sustainable alternatives leads to congestion and overloaded infrastructure.

Need for Data

Effective management requires real-time information and data analysis tools.

A strategy based on knowledge, innovation, and collaboration

Data and Analysis

Monitoring tourist flows and collecting real-time information to better understand visitor behaviour and support decision-making.

01
Sustainable Mobility

Development of alternatives that reduce traffic pressure, encourage more sustainable mobility, and improve accessibility to coastal environments.

02
Participation and Awareness

Promoting a more balanced relationship between visitors, residents, and the natural environment through awareness initiatives and territorial collaboration.

03

Main Goals

SMART Coast works to develop solutions that support a more sustainable, balanced, and territory-adapted approach to tourism management in coastal areas.
