Challenge
Maharees has a 300 year-round residents and over 12.000 visitor per day during warm-weather spells during peak summer season. There is a need to develop innovative digital tools to support the management of visitor flows in the area, and support thedevelopment of smart mobility alternatives for the benefit of nature and also for the quality of life of residents and visitors.
Pilot action
Pilot actions on the Maharees tombolo (Natura 2000 site, Special Protection Area and Ramsar site) will test alternatives modes of transport. It includes: extending the local bus link to connect to the blue flag beach; designing appropriate signage to manage visitor flows and to inform visitors of the sensitivities of the area; developing advanced web technologies to manage of flows. The pilot action will result in coastal resilience by raising awareness of sand dune fragility and reducing the risk of anthropogenic impacts on the sand dune system (which are the only coastal defence in the areas).
