Challenge
On the Basque Coast (8 municipalities and 30 beaches), there is significant pressure on specific sites, including beaches, town centres, and access infrastructure. The influx of day-trippers, who visit for only a few hours, adds to that of residents—often with different purposes—further amplifying tensions. It is necessary to address these peaks in visitor numbers through effective visitor flow management and the provision of predictive information for visitors to the Basque Coast.
Pilot action
The pilot action includes conducting field surveys to better understand tourism dynamics along the Basque Coast, including the reasons behind high visitor flows (who, when, where, and why). It also involves the development of a predictive information system to inform visitors about car park occupancy rates before their arrival. The action will improve communication with the general public through a combination of upstream communication via traditional channels, innovative outreach through consumer applications, and updates on these same platforms.
